Ohio tuition freezes in effect, for now

Associated Press - June 29, 2009 3:55 PM ET

CINCINNATI (AP) - Some Ohio public colleges have announced continued tuition freezes without waiting to see what develops in last-minute state budget talks.

Trustees at the University of Cincinnati say they owed students some guidance for the next school year and voted for no increase but may come back and raise tuition if state funding is cut.

Likewise, Miami University trustees voted on Friday to freeze in-state tuition, based on Gov. Ted Strickland's proposed state budget that includes increased funding for education.

On Monday, Ohio lawmakers put off adoption of a final budget for a week even though the state constitution demands that a balanced budget for the next two years be approved by the start of the business year on Wednesday.
