Ohio man who shot tractor gets suspended sentence

Associated Press - August 14, 2009 6:25 AM ET

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A judge has decided not to send an Ohio man to prison for shooting at a small tractor doing some mowing along his property.

Fifty-3-year-old Randall Turner had faced up to eight years in prison on his guilty plea to felonious assault. But a judge in central Ohio's Pickaway County handed down a 3-year suspended sentence Thursday.

Turner had said he meant to disable the tractor, not hurt its operator, when he fired five shots on Aug. 4, 2008, as a ditch bordering his property was being mowed. Earlier, Turner sued the county, saying the ditch-mowing damaged his property in Ashville, 20 miles south of Columbus. He eventually dropped the suit.

The judge also put Turner on three years' probation, fined him $5,000 and ordered his handgun destroyed.
