BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - A Loveland, Ohio couple has been charged in a murder-for-hire plot against a 7-year-old girl and her mother.

Michael Gray, 33, is accused of sexually assaulting the 7-year-old girl in May of 2008. The girl's mother witnessed the assault.

Clermont County Sheriff A.J. Rodenberg says Gray was scheduled to stand trial in two weeks for rape, attempted rape and gross sexual imposition when officers uncovered the alleged plot.

"Gray developed a plan and solicited others in an attempt to kill the child and her mother to eliminate testimony needed by the state for a successful prosecution," said Rodenberg.

The sheriff's office began to investigate the case on Wednesday, and arrested Gray and his associate, Mary Woodrey, on Thursday morning at their residence in Loveland.

"We feel comfortable at this time that we have foiled any attempts or plans to eliminate the key witness and the victim in this tragic matter," said Clermont County Deputy Rick Combs.

Gray and Woodrey are each charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder and are being held in the Clermont County Jail. Woodrey is being held on a $1 million bond, and Gray is being held on $2 million.

Sheriff Rodenberg says the matter is still under investigation and it's possible additional persons may be charged.
