Woman describes horrific phone call from husband at Fort Hood

MASON, OH (FOX19) - A Mason, Ohio woman says a phone call from her husband during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood was "insane."

Melissa Berry received the call from her husband, Josh, an Army soldier stationed at Fort Hood, on Thursday afternoon.

"He called me and said, 'Honey, someone's shooting in the building I'm in. I love you.' Then, he said nothing else but kept the phone on," said Melissa. "It was insane...like nothing I could describe.

"(There was) a woman over the intercom saying, 'We are being fired on, we need assistance,'" Melissa continued. "I think he truly thought he was going to die."

Thirteen people died and 30 others were injured when Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire on Thursday afternoon.

Josh dislocated his soldier as he was running and ducking for cover. He was not shot.

"I could hear him breathing heavy. He said, 'Oh my God. My arm, my arm.' He kept quiet for the most part and I didn't speak, because I didn't know if the person - if he was hiding and the person would hear him if he could hear me talk on the phone and it was just complete chaos," said Melissa.

Melissa says Josh was just about to leave Fort Hood. He was at the Soldier Readiness Center on Thursday because he was getting his clearing packet to move to Fort Knox, Ky. He had returned from Afghanistan on June 26 of this year.

"He was getting ready to leave there and move closer to me and the kids," said Melissa. "He was so happy this morning to finally be getting closer to home. I can't believe one of his own almost killed him after surviving deployment. The poor families of the fallen."
