CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - It's a nightmare scenario that usually doesn't happen to people, but in this case it did.
Last October, Dr. Tim Delgado was dispatched to a near fatal bicycle crash, and arrived at the scene to find the victim was his newlywed wife, Alison.
Alison Delgado, 27, was bicycling in Anderson Township when she was hit by a car, sustaining severe head and body injuries.
When doctors said she wasn't going to make it, the Delgado family was prepared for the worst. But day by day, Alison improved and together with her husband, is on the fast road to recovery.
Tim knew he wanted to meet his future wife, Alison, a doctor at Children's Hospital, after learning she placed first in the 2005 Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati.
A 2001 graduate of Colerain High School, Alison loved to run, and Tim introduced her to competitive cycling.
"That intrigued me, who is this person and that was my first, she didn't know who I was but I knew who she was going to medical school," he said.
After years of dating and finishing medical school, Alison and Tim were married in May 2010 in Cincinnati.
Five months later, their lives changed forever.
"The radio went off and it said, 'You're picking up a passenger from Anderson Mercy to bring back to University (Hospital),'" said Tim. "Then I talked to my boss when I was leaving the emergency department, spoke with my boss and she said it was a female patient, cyclist, in her 20s, head injury."
Tim says he did not recognize Alison at first and was assessing her as a regular trauma victim.
"I looked up and it was her and I just said, 'That's my wife,'" he said.
Alison says she cannot remember the accident or anything leading up to the night she was hit. Despite wearing her helmet, she suffered severe head injuries, including a brain hemorrhage.
"They were really worried the first 24 hours that she was not going to survive," said Tim. "Then after 24 hours and she was getting better then we started going day by day."
Every day, Tim is by Alison's side, caring for her.
"He's been an amazing husband, having taken off work for me and to be with me," she said.
Tim is expected to return to his residency at University Hospital this weekend. Alison hopes to continue to get stronger through therapy and return to her residency at Children's Hospital in June.
Tim and Alison's families say they would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at University Hospital for all they have done.
