FOX19.com and FOX19 News, weather, traffic, and sports for Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky | Zach Wells

Zach Wells

"I'm very lucky to do what I do for a living, and I know it.  I'm from the Denver area originally, and my dad took me to Mile High Stadium to watch the Broncos for the first time back in 1981, when I was five years old.  I was hooked instantly, and watching the great John Elway for so long really cemented my desire to cover sports for a living.  I also grew up watching the great Celtics/Lakers battles in the 1980s, which only fed my ambition.  One reason I cover sports, and don't play them professionally, is because most NBA players play the game above the rim, while I play it below the net.  Just ask anybody in our Tuesday afternoon intramural basketball league.

I took a rather unconventional road to the FOX19 sports department.  I majored in finance and accounting at Trinity University in San Antonio and worked in the financial sector for four years after graduation in 1998.  I quickly discovered, however, that numbers just didn't get me fired up to go to work.  So I quit my job, went back to Syracuse University to pursue a master's degree in broadcast journalism, and finally I was on the road to doing what I had always wanted to do.  I graduated from Syracuse in 2003.

From there, I worked for KDLH-TV in Duluth, Minnesota and then WLUK-TV, the FOX affiliate in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  Everything you hear about Packers fans, the Cheeseheads who brave cold temperatures to cheer on Brett Favre and Company, is absolutely true.  They're passionate and knowledgeable, and it was so much fun to cover the Packers while I was in Green Bay.

With that said, though, I can't tell you how excited I am to be in Cincinnati.  With great high school sports, a rivalry-filled college scene, as well as the Bengals and Reds, I'm up for the challenge of covering sports in the Tri-State.  You can probably find my wife, Caroline, and I walking our two dogs near our home in Hyde Park.  Please stop me and say hello or e-mail me with any story ideas, suggestions, criticisms or comments.  I'd love to hear from you and thanks for inviting me into your living room night after night!"
