400 Ky. soldiers return home from Afghanistan

Associated Press - March 6, 2009 12:34 PM ET

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) - Hundreds of soldiers who deployed for Afghanistan last March have arrived home.

The Independent of Ashland reports that 400 soldiers from the 201st Engineer Battalion arrived by bus Thursday evening at the Boyd County Middle School Gymnasium in Ashland. The battalion consists of units from Ashland, Olive Hill, Cynthiana and Prestonsburg.

Staff Sgt. Brian Spencer of Flatwoods hugged his wife, Danielle, and said he plans to "just go home with the kids. We've got a little boy and little girl." Spencer told the newspaper that he only got to see his infant daughter for two weeks before departing for Afghanistan.

The soldiers were responsible for clearing hundreds of acres of mine fields and destroying more than 14,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance.
