Youth caught after overpowering jailer, escaping

Associated Press - March 12, 2009 8:04 AM ET

ARGILLITE, Ky. (AP) - Police used a tracking dog to catch a juvenile offender who overpowered a deputy jailer and escaped in eastern Kentucky.

The 16-year-old was being taken from Bath County to the Boyd Regional Juvenile Detention Center on Tuesday when he struck and bit the officer, pushed him out of the way and drove off in his car.

Boyd County Sheriff Terry Keelin told The Independent in Ashland the boy was able to squeeze though the protective screen between the front and rear seats of the vehicle. It had been left partially open.

The youth is six feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Police didn't release his name.

The deputy's name wasn't released, either. He was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
