"This was a fair resolution, we had a strong defense, there a lot of counts that he was acquitted on," said defense attorney Michael Shanks.
He was sentenced to one year on each of the two charges to be served concurrently to each other and his 21 to 27 year sentence on previous sex and drug crimes, meaning Blankenburg will serve no new jail time.
"We felt that putting him through another trial of a week or two or more, extreme cost to the state and Dr. Blankenburg, it really wasn't worth it, as a practical matter of the plea agreement, make sure he doesn't serve any more time, it resolves the whole case and it's in the best interest of both parties," Shanks said.
Blankenburg was seemingly in high spirits during the hearing, smiling and laughing with his attorneys, the defense says a plea deal was their best option.
"This was a practical resolution to a very difficult case," Shanks said.
Blankenburg also faces five years of post release monitoring, his twin brother Dr. Scott Blankenburg is serving 13 years in prison for similar crimes.
