HEBRON, KY (FOX19) - There's some good economic news in Hebron, where there will be thousands of new hires at the three huge Amazon.com distribution warehouses.
SMX, the staffing agency that does all of the seasonal hiring for Amazon.com, says they're looking to hire anywhere from four to seven thousand people.
But you don't have to wait until Christmas. They're ready to put you to work right now.
"We're going to hire over 4-thousand people over the next two months," said Gene Ivey, with SMX. And that's great news to Jeff Almeida, who already has a great job, but is looking for a little something extra to pump-up his family's income.
"My wife lost her job so she's staying home with my 2-year-old son who has special needs," Almeida said.
He's looking for a job with a 4 to 6 hour shift. "Just some grunt work ya' know," he joked. And given his day job as a desk jockey. "When I'm sitting down 8 hours a day it'd be nice to move around."
Almeida said he's looking forward to the "workouts", "Without having to pay the gym fees," he laughed.
"We have orientation starting as early as 8 o'clock in the morning and then it goes from ten-thirty," Counselor Angela Marksbury said to 23-year-old Christopher Bankhead, who said he wants something more solid than the job he has right now.
"Yeah," he smiled. "Steady, full-time, plus overtime!"
Bankhead is in the moving biz.
"My hours are inconsistent so it varies," he said, "I could work ten hours one week and 50 hours the next week."
Both men poured through the pile of paperwork ahead of them.
"Does that work for you?," Marksbury asked Bankhead in scheduling his orientation session. "Ok, let me get this down for you," as she marked her calendar.
"I'm ready to start now," Bankhead laughed.
"A signature, date and social security number," said the orientation supervisor, leading potential new hires through a session. There is a lot to learn before stepping foot on the floor of the Amazon warehouse.
"You have to be able to lift 50 pounds, you have to be able to walk 4 to 10 hours a day, and you have to be able to read," Ivey said.
And, to recognize many of the pop-culture icons of books, movies, and music they'll be handling. There is a test.
"People come in, they fill a background check, they do a drug screening, all that happens right here in this building and within a week or just a little bit over a week, we get people out working on the floor making $11.00 to $11.50 an hour," Ivey said.
Plus, he said there are plenty of chances for overtime.
"That's real money, yessir!," Ivey said. "Lots of people looking for the part-time work, lots of people looking for the full-time work and we're happy to put them to work."
And this year SMX said, there will be opportunities for some folks to stay on, even after the holiday season ends.
Also, anybody who works thru the peak season could win one of 5 free Caribbean cruises for two, all expenses paid.
SMX is taking applications right now. There is also a sign at the Gap distribution center next door to Amazon, also hiring right now for seasonal help.
The SMX Recruiting Office is located at 1960 North Bend Road, which is exit 8A in Hebron off of I-275 (next to Remke's) or you can call and get more information at 859-586-4654.
