(FOX19) - During what could only be described as a very quick trip to Cincinnati, Republican Presidential Contender Mitt Romney made a stop Tuesday at an Republican Party phone bank in Terrace Park.
There, he talked with GOP volunteers who were contacting voters about 2 hot button issues:
Issue 2, which would overturn Senate Bill 5
Issue 3 which would amend the state constitution to forbid the state and federal government from imposing a mandate to buy health insurance.
Romney didn't allow reporters inside while he spoke with those volunteers and didn't want to say much when he came out.
The former Massachusetts Governor did express generic support for Governor John Kasich's efforts to curtail union rights but he would not say whether he supports or opposes the specific measures.
In fact, this is all he would say, "I am not speaking about the particular ballot issues, those are up to the people of Ohio. but I certainly support the efforts of the Governor to reign in the scale of government. I am not terribly familiar with the two ballot initiatives. but I am certainly supportive of the Republican party's efforts here." said Romney.
So lets get this right. Romney, who passed universal healthcare in Massachusetts, but says he would shut down the Obama healthcare plan on the first day of his presidency, wouldn't say whether he supports a state constitutional amendment to free Ohioans from a healthcare mandate?
Maybe, Romney didn't want to come out in support of Issue 2. The latest Quinnipiac survey released Tuesday showed that Ohio voters support the repeal of Senate Bill 5 by a 57-32% margin. Crucially, independent voters in Ohio favor repealing the legislation by a 52-36% margin.
Which may be why Romney told reporters he didn't know much about the ballot initiatives.
There is a conflict here. Because on the Romney Facebook page back in June, the governor's people posted this:
"My friends in Ohio are fighting to defend crucial reforms that the state has put in place to limit the power of union bosses and keep taxes low. I stand with John R. Kasich and Ohio's leaders as they take on this important fight to get control of government spending. Please visit www.betterohio.org for more information."
Of course, betterohio.org is a site devoted to the support of Issue 2.
So here's what you need to know.
What we saw in Terrace Park may be part of the reason that Mitt Romney has failed to break out from the rest of the Republican pack.
Despite so many people calling him the front runner, many voters minds are not made up on Romney.
Maybe that is because Romney, it appears to them, has a hard time making up his mind on a lot of issues.
