CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Cincinnati City Council's Strategic Growth Committee received an update Tuesday on the Horseshoe casino project.
Construction resumed last week after a concrete collapse on Jan. 27 injured 13 workers. Council members will learn what the project development team has done in the past week to ensure safety and prevent further accidents at the site.
Mark Luegering, senior vice president for Messer Construction, said in a letter (.pdf) to contractors and subcontractors at the casino, "An increased level of safety measures, above and beyond what is currently in place, will become our new standard practice on this site. Additional managers and inspection parties have been added to the review/approval and sign off process to confirm future concrete deck pours are ready for concrete placement. We've also hired a second full-time, safetyfocused manager so that the casino and garage areas will each have dedicated people. We are confident that our augmented protocols for supervising, inspecting, and verifying all work performed in the construction schedule can be performed safely."
Luegering also noted that prior to work resuming on the unrestricted areas of the casino, all existing structural steel connections were inspected to verify they are structurally sound and fully detailed.
The committee also heard presentation from the author of the new book, "A City That Sings." Council Member Laure Quinlivan is leading the effort to brand Cincinnati as "The City That Sings."
