HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

Jeremiah Eskew Shahan's life ended too soon, and his death came by way of an attack by the family dog, Onion.

"They kiss each other, everything - they were just good buddies and something happened and I don't know what it was," said Chris Shahan, Jeremiah Shahan's father.

Just four days after giving toys to his son for his birthday, Chris Shahan and his mother, Elizabeth Keller, are returning them to Toys "R" Us, saying they're too painful to look at.

"He was the best baby in the world, he was the happiest. And it was on his birthday that he was so happy, opening his presents," Keller told FOX5.

The attack happened Friday night after Jeremiah Shahan's birthday party.

Keller was putting him to bed when the boy crawled over to pet the dog, a 6-year-old Mastiff- Rhodesian mix.

Since Jeremiah Shahan was just learning to walk, Chris Shahan says he used Onion's fur to pull himself up.

That's when police say the dog latched his jaws around the boy's head and began shaking him back and forth, while Keller witnessed everything.

"I tried everything I could think of to do to try and get him off our baby," Keller recalled through tears.

Police say Jeremiah Shahan was airlifted to UMC's trauma unit, but he passed early Saturday morning.

Now, Chris Shahan wants their tragedy to be a lesson to other parents with pets.

"It just goes to show you that no matter how close you are to your animal, you just got to watch out when it comes to your child," Chris Shahan told FOX5.

Starting a memorial fund at Wells Fargo, Chris Shahan donated all of Jeremiah Shahan's college savings, but isn't sure how the family will cover the funeral.

Meanwhile, Keller has a message to Jeremiah's mother, Amy Eskew, and her family.

"I am so sorry. If I had ever known that this would happen I would have gotten rid of Onion, even though I loved him very much," Keller said.

Those who wish to make a donation to the Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan Memorial Fund can do so at all area Wells Fargo bank branches.

The fund is under account No. 7709151398 and wired donations can be directed to Wells Fargo Bank N.A., 420 Montgomery, San Francisco, CA 94104 under routing transit No. 121000248.

The family also announced the boy's private funeral service for Thursday morning.

Authorities said Onion was placed in an animal shelter for observation. It is expected he will be euthanized.
