MADISON, IN (WAVE) – One person has been injured in the crash of a crop dusting helicopter in Jefferson County, Indiana near the Scott County line.
The crash was reported at 7:46 a.m. near State Road 3 and Highway 256 near New Frankfort. Dave Bell, emergency management director for Jefferson County, said the pilot was the only person onboard the helicopter, which came down in a soybean field.
The pilot, identified by Indiana State Police as Kevin C. Rossan, 35 of Troy, Michigan, was complaining of back pain. Rossan was stabilized at the scene and taken by ground ambulance to Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison for further treatment of what are being called serious injuries.
ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin said Rossan was spraying two chemicals at the time of the crash, an insecticide and a fungicide.
Bell described the ceiling as low at the time of the crash and said that may have played a factor in the incident.
The crash scene around the helicopter, a Bell 47, being secured until investigators from the FAA and NTSB arrive to investigate.
