The NCAA has issued a public reprimand against University of Cincinnati head men's basketball coach Mick Cronin for misconduct during the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
The Division I Men's Basketball Committee said Cronin used profane and abusive language towards a game official following Cincinnati's regional semifinal contest against The Ohio State University. As a result, the committee decided to issue a public reprimand to Cronin.
The committee originally assessed the reprimand and Cincinnati appealed the decision to the Administrative Committee of the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet. The Administrative Committee reviewed relevant materials, correspondence and statements made during the appeal hearing before making its final decision to uphold the reprimand.
"Unfortunately, Coach Cronin's postgame actions were not consistent with the expectations that the committee has for participants in the championship," said Jeff Hathaway, chair of the Division I Men's Basketball Committee and director of athletics at Hofstra University. "The committee has been and will continue to be supportive of high standards of sportsmanship and fair play for all tournament participants. Anything short of this does not serve participants or fans, the championship or the sport in a positive manner."
Ohio State beat UC in the regional semifinal, 81-66.
