NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB/AP) -
A New Haven man was shot in the leg when a stray bullet went through the wall of his second-floor apartment.
Dennis Deloughery Sr. told Eyewitness News that he was shot in the thigh while sitting on his leather couch in the bedroom where his 5-year-old daughter usually sits.
"Then all of a sudden... pop, pop, pop," he said. "My leg just got hit and it felt like it blew up."
Police believe an altercation occurred outside the Edgar Street apartment, which led to shots being fired.
The stray bullet is still in Deloughery's leg and he is in pain, but is thankful that his daughter is not hurt.
"She would be dead for sure," he said.
Doctors told Deloughery that it is safer to keep the bullet in his leg.
According to the Associated Press, witnesses told police there had been as many as eight shots fired. Three parked cars were damaged by gunshots, the Associated Press reports.
The case is still under investigation by police.
