CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Community leaders and students gathered in the Cincinnati Wing at the Cincinnati Art Museum Tuesday to unveil one of the first arts legacies of the 2012 World Choir Games.
The Global Canvas Quilt, a mural created by Games participants and spectators, was a collaborative project between the Cincinnati USA Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Cincinnati Art Museum and Arts on the Corner, a community arts program created by regional artist, Annie Ruth.
Ruth said she was inspired to launch this initiative so that the community could embrace the Games through art.
"The project brought the community together to celebrate the 2012 World Choir Games while focusing on the themes of diversity, unity, music, voice and harmony," said Ruth. "And that's what Arts on the Corner is all about - bringing people together through art and teaching youth the value of community service through creativity."
The Global Canvas Quilt was created by more than 500 Games participants and spectators July 4-14, 2012 at the Global Village on Fountain Square. Visitors used mixed media to design four-by-four-inch square canvases which were assembled to create a colorful, 12-by-six-foot mural.
The mural will be temporarily on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum through Labor Day (including Family First Saturday on Sept. 1) until being installed at its permanent home at Silverton Paideia Academy on Sept. 6.
The Quilt's artists included World Choir Games participants and spectators from the following countries: South Africa, Austria, China, Germany, Kenya, Indonesia, Mexico, Trinidad and the United States.
This is one of several community arts projects that were inspired by the 2012 World Choir Games. Others include:
Art on the Streets, an initiative to bring serendipitous art to the streets of Cincinnati USA.
The Singing Mural, a mural on the WCET building designed by local artist C.F. Payne.
The Big Pig Gig: Do Re Wee, nearly 100 locally-designed ceramic pigs placed around downtown in a "singing stance."
