HAMDEN, CT (AP) -
A 55-year-old Connecticut man has been charged with stealing gasoline by drilling into the gas tanks of several vehicles parked at a Hamden service station.
Steven Guerette of Wallingford used the drill to puncture the tanks at a Sunoco Gas Station on State Street on Tuesday night, and tried to collect the gasoline in a 4-gallon can, police said.
The Hamden Fire Department was called when the gasoline began overflowing the can, filling up the parking lot of the station, which had closed for the night.
Bob Zahornacky, the station's owner, tells The Associated Press that about 50 gallons of gas spilled from three trucks that had been drilled into.
"It went all over the place," he said. "There was a lot of gas. It could have burned, I had nine cars all parked together out there, so it could have got at least nine cars, and who knows where it could have gone from there."
Guerette was found hiding behind the parked cars, police said.
He is charged with reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, larceny and criminal trespass. A message seeking comment was left at a phone number listed for his home address.
Gas at the station was selling for $4.02 a gallon on Tuesday, Zahornacky said.
Guerette was released after posting $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on Sept. 17.
