KENTON COUNTY, KY (FOX19) -
The Kenton County School Board voted in favor Monday night to hire a consulting firm to advise school officials and show them where they can cut costs. The school board has hired Transportation Strategy Company out of Indiana which has experience in fleet management.
The consultants will take a look at the district's fuel costs, maintenance program and routing schedule to make sure they are getting the 14,700 Kenton County kids to school as efficiently as possible.
The district's 185 buses and drivers will remain county employees and more importantly none of the drivers will lose their job. "We're one of the few districts in the state that gave our employees a raise this year...two percent across the board - classified and certified," said Kenton County School Deputy Superintendent, Barb Martin. "We'd like to continue to reward our employees and that's why we're looking for every avenue to save funds."
The consulting firm will cost Kenton County $320,000 dollars the first year of the contract but the company tells school officials they can save the district $1 million over three years.
School officials say the money they save will allow them to continue to give raises to their employees without compromising the entire busing system.
