MIAMI (FOX19) - -
The Cincinnati Reds proved they can win without relying on power hitting if they have enough time to do it, beating the Miami Marlins 5-4 in 11 innings Sunday, picking up 17 hits, 2 bases on balls and only one extra base hit.
Reliever Jonathan Broxton retired two Marlins in short order, gave up a walk, and then watched a heart-palpitating blast from Miami catcher John Buck that barely stayed in left field, where Drew Stubbs caught it to end the game.
The Reds went ahead in the top of the 9th inning when, with Joey Votto and Chris Heisey on base, Ryan Ludwick hit a ground ball single to left field, scoring Heisey.
The Reds got on the board first with Todd Frazier scoring on a single by shortstop Didi Gregorius in the 2nd and catcher Dioner Navarro scoring on a Brandon Phillips groundout in the 4th inning. Miami tied in the bottom of the 4th with a triple that scored Giancarlo Stanton and Carlos Lee.
Navarro singled in the 5th to score Joey Votto, and Brandon Phillips scored in the 6th on a Ryan Ludwick single, restoring the Reds to a two-run advantage at 4-2. That lead didn't last as the Marlins' Carlos Lee scored on a sacrifice fly in the 7th, and former Red Austin Kearns scored on a Jose Reyes double in the 8th.
That was the last run for a while as both teams went scoreless in the 9th and 10th.
Navarro and Jason Ludwick both went three for six, while Gregorius went three for five. Joey Votto went two for four with two walks.
Miami when through no fewer than 9 pitchers; starter Rick Nolasco left the game after 5 innings.
For the Reds, Mat Latos gave up 4 runs and 7 hits in 7 and 2/3 innings before giving was to Sam LeCure who pitched through the 8th inning, Sean Marshall, who got two strikeouts but gave up a single and a walk in the 9th, and Logan Ondrusek who took over for the rest of the 9th and for the 10th. Jonathan Broxton was called in to finish the game. He got the save; Ondrusek got the win. Miami reliever Carlos Zambrano took the loss.
The victory reduced the Reds' magic number to 5, with St. Louis still playing as of this writing. The magic number is the number of Reds wins or St. Louis losses required to clinch the National League Central Division championship.
