CRITTENDEN, KY (FOX19) -
A former school and historic building in Grant County was destroyed by fire.
Fire crews were called to Grant County Park just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Crews found the Dry Ridge Consolidated Colored School, a Rosenwald School- historic segregated school, fully engulfed in flames.
The fire also spread to Rice Chapel, another historic building next to the school, causing major damage. Crews were able to contain the fire to one wall of the chapel. Another building, a little league concession stand, is also a complete loss.
"It is a sad day for anyone who values preserving history," said Tabatha Clemons, Grant County Parks and Recreation Director. "The Rosenwald School cannot be replaced and this is a senseless crime. We will make every effort to find those responsible for these arsons and hold them accountable for their actions."
The school was open from 1925 to 1958. It was moved to Grant County Park with Rice Chapel as part of a restoration plan of historical sites in Grant County.
Police are investigating the fire as arson. Investigators say this is not the first arson at the park this year. Grant County Little League suffered a complete loss on the two-story concession building in May. There is still a $1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrested in the May fire from the Kentucky Arson Task Force.
The Grant County Fiscal Court is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the Rosenwald fire.
Anyone with information should contact the Grant County Sheriff's Office at 859-824-3333.
