ENGLISH, KY (FOX19) -
A 7-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy who made a prank call to Carroll County 911 last week could face a felony charge.
The boys reported that a 16-year-old girl had been shot in English, but the call was false.
Carroll County Central Dispatch received a call that a 16-year-old girl had been shot. The caller was hysterical and the dispatcher was unable to get an address before the caller hung up. However, the dispatch center's technology allowed the dispatcher to determine the call came from Rail Street in English.
Officers from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Carrollton Police Department and Kentucky State Police as well as Carroll County ambulance service responded with lights and sirens running.
When officers arrived in English, they could not find anybody who appeared to be in distress or someone who appeared to be waiting for police and EMS. Officers got out of their vehicles and began walking in English to search for the caller and victim, but could find no one.
Sheriff Jamie Kinman encountered a woman who was walking and inquired what was happening. He explained the call and the woman became upset and worried about her 7-year-old son. She led officers to the house where her son was visiting a 12-year-old friend.
They entered the home and found the two boys and an adult male hiding in a closet. Officers got the three out of the closet and determined both boys had a cell phone. "We recognized one of the boys because he used to live in the City of Carrollton and had made numerous prank calls to 911," Sheriff Kinman said. "As soon as we saw him we figured this was a bogus call." Carrollton Police Chief Michael Willhoite confirmed the boy had made several prank calls to the 911 center in the past.
After a few questions, officers determined that the two boys placed the false 911 call from the 7-year-old's cell phone. The 7-year-old asked the 12-year-old what was the worst thing he had ever done and he said pranking the police. At that point, the 12-year-old admitted he helped the younger boy make the false call.
The man who was hiding with the children was babysitting the 12-year-old. Sheriff Kinman said the man hid because the boys told him the police were outside and explained what they had done. The man believed he had a warrant for his arrest so he hid in the closet with the children.
The Court Designated Worker, who handles charges against juveniles, will be asked to charge them with falsely reporting an incident. Kinman said it's possible the boys could be charged with a felony.
Sheriff Kinman said it is important for parents to teach their children how to use 911, but it is equally important for them to stress it is not right to make prank calls such as this.
"Nobody should ever think it is funny and a joke to say something so serious has happened," Kinman said. "You put the public in danger and put us in danger."
