CLINTON, CT (WFSB) -
The longtime logo at Morgan High School in Clinton is getting an unexpected makeover after officials at the University of Connecticut said its mascot looks similar to theirs.
For more than 50 years, the school has used the husky as its mascot. However, recently UConn officials got wind of the mascot similarities. UConn said the two logos look alike and the University of Connecticut has a federal trademark on the image.
"I just don't understand why they feel we need to change because we're such a small town and high school and UConn is such a big college," said student Gabrielle Holveck.
Currently, the deal is for Morgan High School to keep its mascot as a husky and change what the logo looks like. The logo looks similar to UConn's, however, the high school mascot itself does not.
"My initial reaction was, are you kidding me," said Danielle Coates, of Clinton. "They're getting all their money pumped into them from taxpayers. They're going to pick on little Clinton about the logo we don't make money off"
Clinton is still working on creating a new logo, however a final decision has not been completed.
"We made great efforts to make sure that husky was facing the opposite direction," said First Selectman Willie Fritz (D). "And its tongue is not sticking out, so we didn't get into the issue with the university."
UConn officials said the school does not have to remove the logo from its gym floor or its uniforms, but it needs to phase out the design.
