A 1-year-old baby escaped serious injury after falling off a second-story balcony while her mom smoked marijuana, Phoenix police said.
Elizabeth Montijo, 23, was booked into jail on one count of child abuse and one count of possessing marijuana.
Officers said the infant crawled out an open door on Monday and fell between 10 to 12 feet off the apartment balcony.
City workers who were nearby said they tried to get Montijo to call police or fire rescue but Montijo told them a friend was coming to take the baby to the hospital.
When police entered the residence, officers said they detected a strong odor or marijuana and saw open bottles of alcohol on the kitchen table, prescription pills in bottles lying on the floor and the sliding glass door to the balcony open.
Montijo turned over a small bag of marijuana which she had hidden in the hall closet, police said.
Phoenix fire rescue arrived at the scene and rushed the baby to the hospital. The infant is expected to be OK.
