This week, the Freestore Foodbank opened its doors to thousands of families in need of a holiday meal.
Each year, the number of people in need keeps growing.
For the last three years, the food bank has seen a 35-percent increase in food distribution from year to year. This shows that people in the tri-state are in more need than in past decades.
"This year has been a little tight, but I insist on doing the same thing I've always done over the years," explained Yolanda Jones as she stood in line for the first time at the holiday meal distribution.
Jones celebrates the holiday by cooking a big meal for her family and many others.
"I'm one of the people that always gave," Jones said. "Every year I cook big dinners and all my family members would come to my house, but after I had the accident and had to retire early, it was kind of hard for me to do what I used to do."
Jones' story is a common one in recent years.
"I've talked to a few people who used to be our volunteers here or used to be our donors," said Kurt Reiber, president and CEO of Freestore Foodbank. "And its difficult for them to make this transition, but they're glad that we're here and they're glad that we have a caring community that wants to give to their neighbors in need."
The new faces at Freestore Foodbank highlight that the need for food can strike anyone at anytime.
"Quite honestly, hunger doesn't know a time or a zip code," Reiber added.
"It feels good to receive," Jones said. "There's nothing wrong with receiving. This is what it's about, helping one another. So, I love helping somebody and I appreciate that you guys are able to help us."
Distribution will continue on Tuesday from 8 .a.m.. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Freestore's Customer Connection Center is located at 112 East Liberty Street in Over-the-Rhine. Each household receives a box of canned goods and other trimmings, a bag of produce and either a chicken or turkey.
