BROWNSTOWN, IN (WAVE) – Two adults are facing charges after police say a 7-year-old fell from a moving vehicle on Thanksgiving.
"Thanksgiving night around 6 we received a dispatch," said Lt. Joe Kelly of the Brownstown Police Department.
The call came in about the intersection of State Road 135 and West Commerce Street. It's one of the busier intersections in the small town of Brownstown, Indiana.
"[The caller] had seen a small child had been thrown from a vehicle," Lt. Kelly said.
Somehow the door of a white 1984 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck flung open. Police said they are not sure how fast the truck was going when the girl fell out however it was fast enough to cause her some pretty significant pain.
Police said Shirley Huff, 59, was driving the truck. She's a friend of the girl's father Samuel Williams, 37, who was at home at the time.
Both were arrested and are facing neglect charges for one specific reason.
"Due to the length of time she received medical care," Lt. Kelly said.
Police said it was several hours after the incident took place before she was taken to a Seymour Hospital.
Once she arrived, she was so severely hurt that she was transported to an Indianapolis Children's Hospital.
"Falling out of a vehicle and the injuries that she has, I couldn't imagine the pain. And then the length of time before she got medical care it's just outstanding. She's a very strong little girl," Lt. Kelly said.
The 7-year-old girl continues recovering at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.
Police said they plan to talk to her later this week and examine the truck in question to determine more about the charges.
Williams does have a criminal past. Back in June, he was arrested for strangulation and domestic battery in front of a child.
