UK hires Mark Stoops as head football coach

LEXINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

Mark Stoops is the next head football coach at Kentucky, according to a press release send out Tuesday afternoon.

Stoops, currently the defensive coordinator at Florida State, has been a college assistant or coordinator for 16 years, but this would be his first job as a head coach.

UK recently announced Joker Phillips would return as head coach next season after only 13 wins in three years and a 2-10 record this season.

Stoops, a Youngstown, Ohio native, has been a defensive coordinator the past nine seasons, starting in Arizona and then at Florida State.

Stoops comes from a football family. His father, was a high school assistant coach. His brother Mike is the defensive coordinator for the University of Oklahoma. Mike was formerly the head football coach for the University of Arizona from 2003 till 2011. And brother Bob is the head coach at the University of Oklahoma where he has a National Championship under his belt and an Orange Bowl victory. Bob has been at Oklahoma since 1999.

UC head coach Butch Jones was rumored to be among the coaching candidates UK was interested in, but coach Jones recently said he was not contacted by the school.
