The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on Wednesday detailing the investigation of a fatal plane crash in Greensburg, Ind. that killed four people.
Donald Horan of Greensburg was flying the plane when it crashed on Dec. 2. Donald was flying back from Florida with his wife Barbara and another couple, Stephen and Denise Butz, when the plane crashed.
The report indicates that Horan's Piper PA-46 crashed while trying to land at the Greensburg Municipal Airport in southeastern Indiana.
Air traffic controllers spoke with Horan when the pilot was four miles away from his scheduled landing.
At the time, the weather was foggy and misty and witness reports indicate that the runway was not lit.
NTSB officials say the runway lights were working properly and the plane and engine were in working order.
Reports indicate that a friend of the pilot flew the same route in a similarly equipped plane 30 minutes earlier. The pilot attempted the same approach but decided to divert his flight to Columbus airport, where he landed safely.
Investigators have also recovered three personal data devices from the wreckage. The devices will be sent to a lab in Washington D.C. Officials say the contents of the devices could be released in final reports.
