Report: Big East May Lose More Schools

Posted: Updated:

Cincinnati, OH (FOX19) - Attempts to keep the Big East Conference in tact could be dealt another blow.  According to ESPN the Big East's seven, Catholic, Non Football Subdivision schools could leave the conference or vote to dissolve the Big East all together.

DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St John's, Seton Hall and Villanova are reportedly considering a break from the Big East's football members.

The Milwuakee Journal Sentinel reported late Thursday the schools will join Butler and Xavier from the A-10 to form a new league.

If the seven schools leave the Big East it would significantly weaken the conference's attempt to land a lucrative media rights deal.

About the conference unrest, UC basketball coach Mick Cronin said, "I don't worry about conference realignment.  We have an elite basketball program and football program that's been winning.  It's got to work itself out and everybody's got to keep the faith while it happens."

USA Today reports an official announcement about the seven schools leaving the Big East won't be made until their plans for the future are complete.
