CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) -
Up to $70 million is needed to fund the renovations for University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium.
Fox19 has two questions: Can they fund it? And can they fill it?
The university is asking fans and alumni for donations to make
this project possible.
Donations are not needed to fund the entire project, but it's
important to note that no student fees or general operating funds will be used.
But is the UC fan base strong enough to support this kind of
"There is a lot of alumni that would be able to generate that
kind of revenue," said UC sophomore Alex Siefke.
"I’m very pumped,” added junior Jim Lothrop. “I hope it
brings more excitement to the games and a bigger crowd."
University of Cincinnati students and administrators have hope
that a facelift of Nippert Stadium will create a spark in UC fans and selling
out crowds will be a part of the future.
“Even though we've played football for a long time, football on
this campus is relatively new success in the last decade,” explained athletic
director Whit Babock. “But again, we're going to set our sights to where we're
going in the future and that is our goal."
The major changes will be to the press box, which will be one
story taller and about two and a half times longer. This is also where the
premium seats and boxes will be located.
The concourse levels will be more fan friendly and the concession
stands will also get a new look.
In recent years, the team hasn’t been able to fill the stadium.
So, what do students think needs to be done to get more people in the seats?
“I think they're doing everything they can right now,” said
Lothrop. “They brought in Tommy Tuberville from Texas Tech. They're trying to
get into the ACC, and obviously they're going to bring in a bigger crowd with
the expansion. It’s creating excitement around campus.
Babcock was reluctant to say how many seats would be added, but
the majority will be premium seating.
“In the big run, if we can produce the football teams that we were
producing then it looks like a great idea,” added Siefke.
All of the money to fund the project does not need to be donated,
but the more that is donated the sooner the revenue can go to other projects.
No date has been set to start to start construction, but school
president Santa Ono said it needs to be fiscally sound before beginning.
