Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls and
several City Council colleagues are calling for federal and state action to
take immediate, specific steps to curb gun violence in the wake of the tragic
shooting at a Connecticut school last week.
"In the wake of the tragedy in Connecticut, public support
for stricter gun laws is sharply rising. Citizens support common sense
reasonable requirements on the purchase and ownership of guns. The time for
hand wringing is past. The time for platitudes is past. We are calling on
President Obama and Governor Kasich to work with us to and protect our
citizens," Qualls said.
The actions called for in the
council resolution introduced by Qualls are based on specific steps recommended
by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, co-chair of Mayors Against Illegal
Guns, including:
Confirmation of a new permanent director for the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). The position has been vacant for
six years;
Department of Justice prosecution of those who fail
gun background checks after lying on the form (a felony under current federal
law);
Lift the gag order on the Tiarht
amendment, so that the public is aware of gun traffickers;
Passage of federal legislation, the Fix Gun
Checks Act of 2011 (S. 436), which would require a criminal background check
for all gun sales, including private and online sales;
Restoration of the ban on deadly, military-style
assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which were previously banned under
the federal assault weapons ban that expired in 2004; and
Passage of legislation to make gun trafficking a
felony.
Qualls was joined at the press conference by City Council
members Laure Quinlivan, Chris Seelbach, Cecil Thomas and Wendell Young.
"We must begin somewhere. These proposed measures will not
end gun violence overnight, but they will move us toward a path of critical
change. If new gun legislation can save one life, our efforts will not be in
vain," Qualls concluded.
The resolution will be voted on at Wednesday's City Council
meeting.
