CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
More than one hundred city of Cincinnati road crew workers are on the streets with salt trucks and snow plows, staying on top of this most recent snow storm.
Crews worked throughout the night to treat primary and residential streets.
"They'll work 12 hours, and they'll be relieved in the morning by another group of employees that will start at 7 a.m.," said Jarrod Bolden, superintendent of Cincinnati Traffic & Road Services.
Sixty pieces of equipment will be manned around the clock until the threat passes.
"They really get excited. They're passionate about their jobs," said Bolden. "They leave their families especially at a time like this around the holidays. They're dedicated. They have a service they provide. They understand that. This is what they signed up for."
The city's road strategy is to hit the most traveled streets first.
"We just ask for patience. Our strategies are to address the primary streets first. After we make the primary streets passable, then we'll get to the secondary and residential streets," said Bolden.
Butler County crews said they prepared for this night way back in October, with a 'snow plow rodeo'. Officials ask drivers to be cautious when sharing the road with a snow plow or salt truck.
In addition, nearly 150 trucks will be dispatched by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) throughout southeast Indiana. Crews will plow and salt interstates, U.S. highways and state routes until midnight, and then be replaced by a second shift until noon on Saturday.
INDOT has several tips to driving safely during winter weather conditions.
Accelerate gradually on ice or snow.
Drive slowly to avoid rear-end collisions.
Allow greater distance behind the car ahead.
Brake early, break slowly and never slam on brakes.
