NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
One Tennessee lawmaker says there should be posted warnings about the risk of playing the lottery just as there are warning labels about the dangers of smoking.
It's no secret State Sen. Jim Summerville, R-Dickson, is not a fan of the state lottery. In the past, he's called it immoral and corrupt.
He thinks too many people waste their money playing it and said a warning label would help.
"It's more for fun. I have a chance, one-in-however many million," said James Winger, of Nashville.
It may go without saying that playing the lottery is a gamble, but Summerville doesn't think the odds are so obvious to everyone.
He has filed a bill that, if passed, would put warning labels on Tennessee Lottery advertisements, such as billboards and TV and radio commercials.
It would read: "Warning: you will probably lose money playing the lottery."
Summerville said he wants to fully disclose the risks of gambling, and not everyone thinks it's a bad idea.
Kate Love of Cheatham County said a warning label would help deter some people from spending money they may not afford to lose.
"People go out and spend their disability checks, whatever they're getting, and they're not winning anything," Love said.
It isn't the first time Summerville has targeted the lottery. Last year, he proposed changing the state constitution to ban lottery advertising in all media forms except at stores where tickets are sold.
That plan never made it out of committee.
Getting this bill passed could also be a challenge. So far, Summerville's bill has no co-sponsors, and so far no House companion bill has been filed.
Lottery officials have taken no position on this proposal.
