GREEN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -
LaSalle High School held a discussion about the crisis of violence in our schools and communities on Monday.
Dr. Daniel Nelson, medical director of the Child Psychiatry Unit at
Children's Hospital and its National Center
for School Crisis and Bereavement spoke about crisis during violent situations, hosted by LaSalle's parent organization.
Parents
of LaSalle students, as well as parents from Mother of Mercy and
McAuley high schools and neighboring elementary schools, were all invited do the discussion.
Dr. Nelson is
an expert in counseling in crisis settings. He has been a member of
teams assisting in the wake of the terrorist bomb attack on the Alfred
P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995;
the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New
York City, and the mass shooting in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., on
July 20, 2012.
The National Center for School Crisis and
Bereavement at Children's Hospital was established in 2005 with initial
support from the September 11th Children's Fund and the National
Philanthropic Trust and supplemental funding from Procter & Gamble.
It
was created to promote an appreciation of the role schools can serve to
support students, staff and families at times of crisis and loss, in addition to training of individuals in school-related professional
education programs in the areas of crisis and loss, and serve as a
resource for information.
