ENGLISH, IN (WAVE) - Five people, including two young children, were killed early Thursday morning in a mobile home fire in Crawford County.
A charred frame is all that remains of the mobile home.
Talk of the Crawford County tragedy filled the hearts of neighbors in the rural area. Ole' Country Store owner Donnie Melton just saw John 'Jay' Denton and his daughter, Kara Denton, just a fews days ago.
"Before school she would grab bubblegum and count it out to me, and pay me with her own money, so to speak. I knew the family as customers, but everyone out here is like family," Melton said.
Crawford County Sheriff Tim Wilkerson said family members who live nearby tried to rescue the victims, but the flames were too intense.
"The father woke up, and he saw a glow. I believe he threw a shirt and shoes on and ran down there with an axe and chainsaw, but he couldn't break open the door," Sheriff Wilkerson said.
Investigators traced the source to a wood-burning stove. A 9-1-1 call came in around midnight. Three fire departments had to haul in tankers to extinguish the flames because there isn't a water source or hydrants nearby.
"A tanker would come in and drop water, pull on out and another tanker would come in and refill water so the supply would stay up," Sheriff Wilkerson said.
The victims include Kara Denton, 8, her father, John "Jay" Denton, 32, Denton's half-brother Bill Turben, 35, Curtis Rogier, 3, and his mother Dee Rogier. Family members said Jay and Dee recently began dating.
The fire started around 1:30 Thursday morning on Denton Road south of English.
