HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) -
Northern Kentucky University Athletics announced a plan on
Saturday that will help the university transition into the NCAA Division I and
Atlantic Sun Conference.
"Go Gold: NKU's Division I Campaign" seeks to raise $6
million to help support this transition.
The campaign has four priorities: Supplementing athletic
scholarships, enhancing and renovating facilities, academic support and the Go
Gold Excellence Fund.
NKU believes that in order to recruit top talent, the
university needs to be able to award attractive scholarship packages to student
athletes. The university has committed to increasing its scholarship funding
and upping its total scholarship level this academic year.
The university also believes that in order to succeed at the
Division I level, the school must invest more in its facilities. The university
wishes to construct new athletic facilities and upgrade and renovate others.
The Bill Aker Baseball Complex is a high priority for NKU.
NKU is committed to helping their student athletes suede
academically. In order to do so, teams will be provided portable electronic
devices and Internet connections to help them keep up with schoolwork during
road trips. More academic advisors will also be hired to assist student
athletes.
The Go Excellence fund will support the reclassification in
numerous ways. The fund will help with recruiting, travel expenses, equipment
purchases and other athletic needs.
