ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - The drummer for Country Music Star Kellie Pickler has been identified as one of the people hospitalized in a massive crash Saturday along Interstate 65. Drummer Gregg Lohman was airlifted to University Hospital Saturday.
Country star Kellie Pickler asked for prayers on Facebook Sunday posting,"Gregg is not just my drummer, he is family. I believe in miracles and the power of prayer, so it would mean the world to me, my band, and Gregg's family if you would please keep him in your prayers. Thank y'all so much."
Doctor Robert Elliott runs the Tennessee State University department of music. Lohman works there part-time when he is not working for big-name acts like Kellie Pickler, Lady Antebellum and SheDaisy. Elliott says Lohman is a beloved teacher on TSU's campus. Elliott explained, "His student's see him playing on television and see him playing at award shows and they say, I want to be like that when I finish school." Elliot said Lohman is being prayed for by his colleagues. "The prayers of Tennessee State University and it's students, especially faculty and students in the school of music, are with him."
Kentucky State Police said Lohman was driving a pickup truck in the southbound lanes of I-65 when he slowed for a fiery crash that happened 16 minutes earlier on the northbound side of the interstate. In the first crash, six people, heading south, died after their Expedition was rear-ended by a semi and burst into flames. Police say when Lohman slowed down for that crash, a semi driver failed to notice and crashed into him. His vehicle then hit a 2005 Saturn SUV and that vehicle rear-ended a 2012 Chevy SUV.
Lohman suffered head and neck injuries. TSU staff and students are hoping for a speedy recovery and hoping for Lohman's return next semester.
