Can you trust online product reviews?

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

During this season of holiday spending many consumers rely on product reviews to help make their purchasing decisions. However some product reviews may not be totally reliable.

If you've been shopping for a new car, a set of tires or home electronics you've probably come across some products reviews which will basically tell if the product is worth the money, but internet defamation attorney, Whitney Gibson, says product reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt.

"I really try to encourage people when you're reading reviews on line you do need to be a little skeptical sometimes about them."

Gibson says there are ways to tell if a product review may be stretching the truth. "If they appear to be really short, if they appear to be vague, if you see a pattern of reviews.....there's a lot of reviews during a short period of time you need to be careful just in reading those."

Gibson says networking can help consumers decide which products are worth the money. "If you have a Facebook page or a Twitter account and there's a way you can ask people you trust about what they think about....tell me what they would recommend because you know you're getting advice in that situation from somebody that's real and who you trust."

FOX19 asked some viewers how much they rely on product reviews.

Yu Ping of Anderson Township says "80-percent, 80 or 90 percent. it's because I believe if most the people think this product is good so I will trust it."
