Groundbreaking today for I-71 interchange

Posted: Updated:
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The first step to easing traffic on I-71 kicked off today.

FOX19's Miranda Del Pozo is live at the corner of Fields Ertel and Montgomery Rd. with more on the big groundbreaking.

Most people in the tri-state have had to deal with traffic in this area at some point. Usually, there's a back up on northbound 71, especially during rush hour. The Ohio Department of Traffic (ODOT) and Warren County leaders are working to change that.

A growing population thanks in part to Procter & Gamble for causing an economic boom in the area. The traffic projected for the area by 2020 was 32,000, 10 years ago it was already at 48,000.

ODOT has identified the Mason Montgomery and Fields Ertel interchange as a safety and congestion hot spot.

Del Pozo says there is a high number of rear collisions due to delays and congestion. Today, the regional transportation industry will break ground on the loop ramp.

The project will ease congestion by allowing drivers traveling northbound on 71 to bypass the current off-ramp and merge directly onto northbound Mason Montgomery Rd.

The Groundbreaking will be held at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at the park and side parking lot next to the intersection.

Funding has already been secured for the project. It is scheduled to be complete by 2015.
