CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

St. Vincent de Paul expects to deliver thousands of holiday meals to the homes of neighbors in need this holiday season.

On Friday, the Catholic voluntary organization gave away more than 800 meals to individuals in need at their West End Outreach Center. In addition, volunteers expect to deliver more than 1,500 holiday meals to the homes of the needy this year.

Since the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program benefits cuts went into effect on November 1, St. Vincent de Paul has served more families than ever before. Requests for help are up 20 percent from 2012 and have continued to rise this month.

Requests for help are not only increasing in the urban core, but in neighborhoods across Greater Cincinnati. Many families who were once self-sufficient are now asking for help for the very first time. St. Vincent de Paul volunteers help these families through neighborhood-based food pantries or by delivering food to their homes, along with other assistance the family might need.

There are three ways to help families in need this holiday season.

  • When shopping at a local Kroger, drop your change in the clear acrylic donation boxes at the check-in counter. A donation of just $1 provides four meals for a person in need.
  • Drop no-perishable food items in the Food From the Heart donation barrels, located near the exits at local Kroger stores.
  • Visit www.SVDPcincinnati.org or call 513-421-HOPE to make a financial gift or to learn more about getting involved.

The volunteers of St. Vincent de Paul will continue to visit homes of neighbors in need to provide assistance throughout the holiday season.
