NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - New Albany police plan to release the findings of the investigation into a fire that killed three juveniles.
In a press release sent to WAVE 3 News Monday evening, New Albany Police Chief Sherri Knight stated NAPD, the New Albany Fire Department and the Floyd County will hold a press conference Tuesday to disclose new information in the January 4 fire that killed Trinity Hughes, 2, Tyrese Hughes, 4, and Tai'zah Hughes, 6.
Officials initially stated the cause of the fire was due to a space heater placed too close to combustible items inside the home. Monday a source told WAVE 3 News Reporter Katie Bauer that this fire was intentionally set and police are now investigating these deaths as homicides.
WAVE 3 News has also confirmed that investigators have identified a suspect in this case and we are told that person is in custody on unrelated charges.
New Albany Police are remaining tight lipped about the case, but late Monday on the NAPD Facebook page, a post states reports of arrests in this case have been made prematurely and the investigation is ongoing at this time.
On the night of the fire, neighbors said they were unable to get inside of the home to save the children, but firefighters were able to run through the back of the house and rescue a fourth sibling, Taty'ana, 5.
Taty'ana, who suffered third-degree burns on 20 percent of her body, was rushed to Riley's Hospital for Children in Indianapolis and put in a medical coma. On January 6, her lungs had cleared.
According to the children's grandmother, Marie Hughes Clark, Taty'ana lost three toes as a result of the fire. As of January 13 WAVE 3 News was told she was doing much better, but could not talk because of a breathing tube.
