CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati's bid for the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials has fallen short.

USA Track and Field has announced that the city of Los Angeles will host the women's and men's 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

USA Track and Field had selected Cincinnati as a finalist for consideration to host the trials in 2013. The bid was a collaborative effort between the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon and the Greater Cincinnati Sports Corporation.

"First of all, we want to congratulate Los Angeles for its selection to be the host for both the men's and women's 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials," says Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the Flying Pig Marathon. "We know that the organizers will do a world-class job in organizing the event to find the best Marathon team for the 2016 games in Rio."

Proponents for holding the trials in Cincinnati say they will not give up.

"There will be more bids in the future, and we look forward to telling our story again for other national and international event organizers," says Simpson-Bush.

According to the bid specifications, 100 male and 100 female marathon runners are expected to compete in the Olympic Marathon Trials attracting a national TV broadcast audience and tens of thousands of visitors to the host city for the event managed by USA Track and Field based in Indianapolis.

The 2016 Olympic Trials will be held Feb. 13, 2016.
