Remke, FOX19 team up for coat drive

(FOX19) -

In case you missed it, FOX19's Dan Wells spoke with Scott and James, two homeless men in Covington, about how they're handling this harsh winter.

Along with volunteers from the Brighton Center, Dan gave them coats and gloves – simple items the men expressed thankfulness to receive. Read the full story HERE.

Inspired by this story, FOX19 is partnering with the Brighton Center to host a coat and blanket drive. As temperatures are expected to return to freezing, we're collecting donations of items used to stay warm, simple means that can mean a huge difference to a homeless person.

"We have a couple of blankets. Between me and him balling up in the blankets, one will take the blankets off of the other, and you'll get cold. You can't get a fire going because police will be on you. [We're] living under a bridge. I mean, it's extreme cold," Scott, a homeless man in Covington described.

Jarrett Spisak of the Street Outreach Program says even though homelessness is a large problem, small things can make a big difference.

"That morning we were out with Dan, we gave a man a pair of gloves. He hadn't had gloves all night … he was almost in tears. That's how a lot of the people react when we're able to help them," said Spisak.

Until next Friday, you can donate winter wear and blankets at Remke Markets.

FOX19 invites you to participate in our effort to collect warm clothes for those on the streets.

Please donate new or gently used coats, sweaters, gloves, scarves, hats and blankets at any area Remke store!
