(RNN) - British soccer star David Beckham is eyeing Miami for the next Major League Soccer franchise.
"I wanted to create a team we can start from scratch. I know there was a
team here 10 years ago and unfortunately they folded. But I wanted to
create a team that would be very personal," Beckham said during the news
The footballer, who made a splash with his revealing H&M commercial during the Super Bowl, would own the team with his investment group. It would be the American professional soccer league's 22nd team.
Speaking from the Bayfront Art Museum, Beckham, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced the plans to bring a team back to Miami, but it was clear details still needed to be worked out for the stadium construction.
The Sun-Sentinel reported Beckham is negotiating with Gimenez to lease waterfront land near the Port of Miami for a 25,000-seat stadium.
Miami Fusion F.C. participated in the MLS from 1998 to 2001 before folding due to financial constraints.
Beckham said that the league has changed a lot since the Fusion folded, and said that when a team brings in great players, good things can happen.
"I'm talking about the Heat," he said.
Beckham's walks on the red carpet with wife Victoria, aka "Posh Spice," and fashion modeling have made him recognizable to non-soccer fans as well. He retired in 2013 after a 20-year career.
The midfielder won 19 trophies, 10 of them league titles, and won championships in four countries. He also appeared 115 times for England's national team, including the Olympics and the World Cup.
Most recently, Beckham played for Paris St. Germain and donated his pay to charity.
Beckham played from 2007 to 2012 with the LA Galaxy, and his contract contained a clause to start a franchise, The Guardian reported.
The Galaxy loaned Beckham to Milan in 2008.
The footballer, known for his skilled left foot, began his career with Manchester United in England, playing with the legendary club from 1993 to 2003. Beckham also played for Real Madrid.
