Watching "chick flicks" may help your relationship

CINCINNATI (FOX19/CNN) -

It turns out, there may be a secret power to romantic movies --- or "chick flicks," as some people call them.

A new study by the University of Rochester says watching a romantic comedy or date movie with your significant other can actually strengthen your relationship. The New York Times reports the study found couples who watched these movies together were less likely to get a divorce or separate.

The reason?

Watching the movie together leads to introspection for each person and gets the conversation about your own relationship started in a non-threatening way, according to the researchers.

Watching other couples on-screen go through highs and lows can make it possible for you to realize and address your own issues.

The findings of this study are preliminary. However, they are certainly intriguing. And they could have powerful effects on marriages and couples therapy in the future.
