QUEENSGATE, OH (FOX19) -

A building in Queensgate is damaged following a Sunday afternoon fire.

The fire started in the old Hudepohl Brewery at 801 West 6th Street. Metal welders were working inside the building when the blaze broke out. District 2 fire units arrived on the scene to find heavy fire on the first floor and black smoke exiting the windows from all three stories.

Authorities say the blaze was able to be controlled in about 20 minutes thanks to aggressive attacks from firefighters.

The building is where Hudepohl used to brew their beers until moving locations in the mid 1980s. The smoke stack on the structure still reads ‘Hudepohl' and can be seen from numerous areas throughout downtown. The building has been vacant for several years according to Fire Chief Thomas Parker.

"Many hazards remain in the building due to previous fire damage and scrapping operations," a release from Chief Parker said. He says the fire was caused by scrap metal igniting due to crews using cutting torches inside of the building.

Propane tanks were reportedly involved in the fire, with some of them venting and burning.

No one was injured in the fire and workers inside the building were able to safely escape. The damage estimate has not been released.
