19 things you didn't know about UC Professor Grant Schaffner

A University of Cincinnati professor played a role in the 2014 Winter Olympics that concluded Sunday in Sochi, Russia. 

Grant Schaffner, an assistant professor in UC's Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, led the design team for a skeleton sled that American Matt Antoine rode when he won a bronze medal.

I had the chance to ask him 19 questions: 

  1. Favorite food in Sochi? A little restaurant that served all breakfast food and great coffee.
  2. Favorite sports team? South African Springboks rugby team
  3. Favorite dish to cook? Almonds. I'm a breakfast person. My wife is the cook!
  4. What other languages can you speak? Afrikaans which is the official language in South Africa, a little bit of French and a little Russian. 
  5. What sport did you play in school? Soccer, rugby and track.
  6. What is your favorite TV show? 24
  7. What neighborhood did you grow up in? Victoria, South Africa
  8. What was your first car? A Mini. It stalled every two minutes on the highway.
  9. Last restaurant you ate at? A great restaurant in Moscow where we met with old friends.
  10. Last movie you saw? Lone Survivor!
  11. Mustard or ketchup on your hot dog? Both!
  12. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas.
  13. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be? Nelson Mandela
  14. What is one of your biggest fears? Not being successful.
  15. Do you prefer dogs or cats? I used to say just dogs but a cat recently adopted our family and now I've grown quiet fond of them. 
  16. How many siblings do you have? One brother and two sisters.
  17. Relaxing on the beach or skiing in the mountains? The beach but I'm starting to like winter sports more and more.
  18. Who did you look up to when you were a kid? Nelson Mandela and Neil Armstrong.
  19. Favorite book? The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe.
