CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) -
A neighborhood group is one step closer to resurrecting the former Keller's IGA in Clifton after an agreement to purchase the property was signed Friday.
The Clifton Cooperative Market signed an agreement with current owner Steve Goessling to purchase the property, located at 319 Ludlow Avenue.
Goessling purchased the former neighborhood grocery store after it closed in January 2011, promising to bring a full-scale grocery back to Clifton's Gaslight District. Plans came to a halt when Goessling failed to secure external financing during renovation and abandoned the project in 2013.
Committee member Adam Hyland said the idea of the Clifton Cooperative Market is to give local residents an opportunity to have a stake in a project that has faced so many setbacks in recent years. It would be under a cooperative format, which means it would be owned by the community.
"There's no fee to shop there but you can buy an owner share starting at $200," he told FOX19.
It would be a full-service grocery with local and organic produce, seafood, butcher, beer and wine, health and cleaning products.
Buying the property is phase one for the neighborhood group, which is currently fundraising and plans to close on the building within six months.
The Clifton Cooperative Market will hold a press conference at the site Friday at 4 p.m.
