Stolen police car taken on multi-county joyride

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) – When a Lexington Police Department patrol car was spotted in eastern Louisville Metro with its lights and siren on, it got the attention of Louisville Metro Police. It turns out the patrol car had been stolen.

Early on the morning of May 9, Lexington Police notified Kentucky State Police that one of their marked police cars had been stolen. The car was parked outside the home of an officer. Louisville Metro officers reported seeing the patrol car near the on I-64 near the Gene Snyder Freeway. The patrol car then headed east in I-64 into Shelby County.

Officers with the KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division spotted the patrol car around the 31 mile marker and tried to pull it over. The police car refused to stop and lead officers on a chase of more than 20 miles. The chase ended in Franklin County at the 53 mile marker when CVE officers used stop sticks to disable the vehicle.

Inside the stolen cruiser, police found three juveniles. They were taken into custody. Because of their ages, names are not being released.
