Newport Aquarium welcomed two new king penguins to the family this week.

The penguins, which are not related, hatched inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza exhibit over the weekend. Their eggs were both laid on April 4.

Each penguin chick weighed about one-half of a pound when they were born and were about the size of a baseball. They also both have a mother and a father.

"These were some of the biggest penguin chicks I've ever seen," said Dan Clady, senior biologist at the aquarium.

Newport Aquarium is one of only 16 institutions in the United States to have king penguins on exhibit.

The fact that these two birds were birthed on the same day is extremely rare. Only about 14 king penguins are born per year at institutions in the U.S.

Newport Aquarium has had king penguins since the aquarium opened in May 1999.

The public will have an opportunity to name the two king penguin chicks on the Newport Aquarium Facebook page. The contest to name them begins Friday.

Visitors can now see the chicks inside the Kroger Penguin Palooza exhibit at the aquarium.
